The Book of Greek Cooking
Published in Paperback by H.P. Books (May, 1993)
Authors: Lesley MacKley and Leslie Mackley
Average review score:

Great introduction to the Greek cuisine.
In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.

This installment, the Book of Greek Cooking, starts with a brief introduction into the basics of the Greek cuisine and a glossary of ingredients, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major courses, from mezes and soups to baking and desserts. Special chapters are dedicated to salads and vegetable dishes, fish, (red) meat, and poultry and game. Classics such as avgolemono soup, baklava, chicken pie, dolmades, marinated olives, moussaka, live bread, souvlakia, tzaziki, spanakopitta, and spiced rack of lamb appear next to unique dishes such as cinnamon knots, coriander mushrooms and pork with pears.

From afelia (coriander pork in cilantro and red wine sauce) to zucchini with cheese, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the richness of the Greek cuisine - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended: This series' installments on North African, Mediterranean, Spanish and French provincial cooking, antipasti, pasta, light pasta sauces, and pizzas and Italian breads.

Bounty Hunter Blues
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (June, 1990)
Author: John Leslie
Average review score:

Fun characters make for a nice leisurely read.
I have become a John Leslie fan via his Key West PI Gideon Lowry series. I stumbled upon "Bounty Hunter Blues" in a used book store and glad I picked it up. Written in 1990 it is now out of print, but a most worthwhile read. A nifty collection of characters, some of whom are most Runyonesque. A twisty plot where the bad guys get their due. The good guys get their rewards, some rather unique. The plot is resolved in a believable way.

Really glad I found this one. John Leslie's Gideon Lowry series is still in print and it is an enjoyable read.

Bring Home the Joy
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (01 June, 2000)
Authors: Lawrence J. Crabb, Kevin, Dr Leman, Les Parrott, Leslie Parrott, Gary Smalley, Becky Tirabassi, Roger Tirabaai, Neil Clark Warren, and Larry Crabb
Average review score:

Worth a look or two
The problem with books like this is that with several authors, some are very strong and others are not as worthwhile. For instance, I don't understand why Neil Clark Warren's chapter on sex was included when he mostly just relayed information from the studies of Clifford and Joyce Penner. Why not go directly to the source? The book is a good resource if you want to see what authors are most helpful to you personally. Overall, it provides some worthwhile information on maintaining a good Christian marriage, especially the chapters by Larry Crabb.

Bryan and Darrow at Dayton
Published in Textbook Binding by Russell&Russell Pub (January, 1967)
Author: Leslie Henri, Ed. Allen
Average review score:

Contemporary Edited Compilation of the Scopes Monkey Trial
Leslie H. Allen's edited compilation of "Bryan and Darrow at Dayton," subtitled "The Record and Documents of the 'Bible-Evolution' Trial," was characterized as a "contemporary history and a ready reference record for a future in which those issues will loom ever larger until in men's minds they have been squared with the truth." In his forward, dated July 27, 1925, Allen wrote that although he had strong convictions towards one side he hoped his readers would not be able to judge if he was a Fundamentalist or a Modernist. However, in characterizing the conflict in terms of a religious schism rather than as religion versus science, Allen gave his sympathies away. Allen included public statements and incidents surrounding the trial and Bryan's undelivered speech, as well as two-page biographies of William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow, passages from Genesis, and three pages from Hunter's "Civic Biology" (the state required textbook at that time). While it is fairly obvious Allen sided with the Scopes defense, this does not detract from his attempt to provide a balanced treatment of the trial. Allen refrains from including editorial comments, letting the chronlogy of events dictate the order statements outisde the courtroom are included. Only when Allen writes in his own voice does he betray his allegiances. Of course, his title reflects that in 1925 the Scopes "Monkey" Trial was seen more as a clash of personalities than the resolution of major issues. I did my dissertation on the Scopes Trial and while Allen's book is not the complete stenographic record of the trial published elsewhere, it was certainly a laudable attempt in its day to lay out the trial for those interested in evaluating the rhetoric of the two main figures, if not the legal arguments made by others that determined the actual case.

Bubble Gum Board Books: Colors
Published in Hardcover by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (February, 1900)
Authors: Leslie Eckard and Golden Books
Average review score:

A fun way to learn colors!
What a unique presentation - a book that looks like a gumball machine, filled with colored "gumball" books. Each "gumball" is a mini board book with verse and pictures of items that are the color of that book. The flap opens up and the "gumballs" come out, one at a time, just like a real gumball machine. This book has a high "neat-o" factor. It's more fun than your average book.

Canals of Mid America
Published in Paperback by L. C. Swanson (December, 1986)
Author: Leslie C. Swanson
Average review score:

This is a very good book on its subject
This short (42 pages) book was published in 1964. It is short, but packs a good deal of information into those pages. Its first chapter covers the history of canal building, while the second one covers life on the early canals of the United States. Chapters three through five cover the canals of Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kentucky, Illinois and Michigan. Chapter six looks at the last canal build in the 19th century, the Hennepin canal.

In spite of its length, this is a very good resource for anyone interested in midwestern canals, and it does contain a surprising amount of very good black-and-white photographs. This is a very good book on its subject.

The Care of Pictures
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1975)
Author: George Leslie. Stout
Average review score:

An important book for the artist and collector
One of the major concerns of serious painters is how to avoid the destruction that time imposes on paintings. Stout's book uses historical examples to show what can go wrong with various techniques and how some past masters minimized the potential damage through a solid knowledge of their craft and their materials.

At both the Artist Forum and the Cennini Forum, we have often recommended 'The Care of Pictures' as an important source of solid information. Written in clear, understandable prose, the reader does not have to have a background in painting conservation in order to understand the book. Not only are the questions concerning materials fully explored, the all-important question of handling, housing and moving pictures is discussed in depth.

This is a must-have book for any serious artist or collector.

Controversies in Ethics in Long-Term Care (Springer Series on Ethics, Law, and Aging)
Published in Paperback by Springer Pub Co (February, 1995)
Authors: Ellen Olson, Eileen R. Chichin, and Leslie S. Libow
Average review score:

Comprehensive overview of most ethical issues in LTC
What is important in this volume is the fact that the complexity of ethical issues related to long-term care is fully elucidated, in one volume, for the first time. The cases are powerful, relevant and useful for staff training and discussion. The Bart Collopy piece is extremely clear and helpful, perhaps the best in wrestling with the issues. A must read for long-term care providers
